Terry Quiram called the September meeting of the Central Illinois Woodturners to order at 6:30, Monday, September 11.

October meeting

The October meeting will be 6:30 Monday, October 9, at the Woodcraft store in Peoria.

New member

The Central Illinois Woodturners welcome Frank Kobilsek to the club.

Mentoring

A mentoring page has been posted on the CIW website listing those who have volunteered to be mentors. The page shows the mentor's skill level and what he is able to teach.

Participation

Members got into a discussion regarding club participation. The bottom line is this: The success of this club, as any other organization, depends on the participation of its members.

Several way to participate were mentioned: bringing in items for show-n-tell, doing a demo for the club, showing up at club events such as the top-a-thon and turning at the nature center, helping to set up and clean up when we have a professional turner demo and ,of course, being a club officer.

Officer election

We still need a volunteer for a club president and for secretary.

Steve Sinner Demo

The Steve Sinner demo that was September 2nd was a rousing success. Click here to see photos of the demo. Thanks to David Kraft for taking them.

Top-a-thon

This years top-a-thon will be December 9 at the Woodcraft store in Peoria. It was approved by the club to make this a teaching event for children. Dick Coers is contacting several organizations, girl scouts, boy scouts, etc. to see if they want to participate.

Turning event

The club will turn from 10-4, Saturday, October 21, at Sugar Grove Nature Center at Funks Grove, just south of Bloomington off I-55. Members can sell their work at this event.

Woodcraft event

Woodcraft is having a pen turning day Saturday, November 11. Come to the Peoria store and turn a pen to be given to a person in the military.

Club gallery

Keith Zimmerman is still looking for pictures of members' turnings for the club gallery. Keith said you can send him pictures of any size.

October demo

Paul Cobb will give a video presentation of segmented turning.

November meeting

We'll have our top spinning contest at the November meeting. The top must be all wood and the maximum length of the pull string is 24 inches.

Dick Coers gave a talk and led a discussion about teaching; what it takes to be a good teacher. Having taught woodturning and other woodworking classes for several years, Dick was able to tell us many things he has learned from his own experiences as well as suggestions he has picked up from other sources. Thanks for your help Dick.
