A new positon of Membership Chairman was added. Dave Carroll was elected to fill this position. Congratulations to all the officers. There was discussion about two new sections to the newsletter or website; a "For Sale or Trade" section, and a "Hints and Tips: section. Examples that were presented were:
CIW Turning Saturday - Dennis Belcher talked about this great day. We had a good turnout and everyone spent a entire day teaching and learning new techniques. There are a few housekeeping things that need to be addressed. There are a few tools need to be returned to the right owner, instructors need to turn in bills, and there are lots of Packard Woodworks and Craft Supplies catalogs left over. Sugar Grove Nature Center - Jerry Rhoads reported about another great club event. There were seven lathes going all the time and lots of spectators. We were located at the west end of the shelter again this year. Our new club membership officer, Dave Carroll, was introduced and approved in Peoria. His duties will include maintaining a membership list with dues information, a sign in sheet for guests/visitors, etc. Jerry has had only thirteen people signed up for the Hartville tool's discount program. We need seven more to sign up. Please let Jerry Rhoads know if you want to participate by sending him your address. At least 20 names are needed. Hartville promises not to give your contact information to anyone, they are a reputable company. Education committeeDave Kraft reported that we have two demonstrators coming in 2008. Duane Leach from the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners will be here on April 26, 2008. The 2007 Top-a-Thon was held on Saturday, December 8 at Woodcraft. This year, $1015 was raised from donations for tops and christmas ornaments. The weather forecast scared off a lot of members as there were only about 14-15 members there at sometime during the day. We were joined by 2 young men from the Children's Home. Their faces gleamed with excitement as they got some hands on experiece with making a top with their own hands. Both were successful in their efforts and left with completed tops and and some beautiful wooden boxes donated by Terry Quiram to keep them in. Santa made a surprise visit over the lunch hour. He was offered a chance to make a top also, but Safety Officer for the club said that Santa was a no, no at the lathe because of the risk of his beard getting caught in the spinning lathe. Santa also seemed to have an aversion to wood chips in his beard. Jim Meizelis brought fresh bread and sausage and Mary Fairfield added some delicious brownies. Harold Levin contributed a Christmas Ornament that brought in the highest single donation of the day - $100 (He bought back his own ornament!). Dave Kraft brought in a number of small bowls to be given to children on Christmas Morning. Bill Paullo contribution a "box of boxes" that he made for the children. Jim Meizelis brought weed pots with greenery and flowers as Christmas presents for the children. All of the gifts from club members will be delivered to the Children's Home by Roger Buss.
