This month's meeting was opened at 6:30 by Roger Alexander.

Our next meeting will be April 9th at Woodcraft. The meeting topic will be options for personal dust protection.

There were no guests and no new members this month.

Old business

A motion was made and passed to purchase a banner that can be displayed whenever the club does demonstrations. The banner will be 32 X 72. CENTRAL ILLINOIS WOODTURNERS will be displayed in large letters centered on the banner with http://www.centralillinoiswoodturners.com along the bottom in smaller letters. Dick Coers will make the purchase.

New Business

Terry Quiram gave the treasurer's report.

Four (4) new DVD's have been added to the library. Jimmy Clewes 3 disc set "Turn It On", and Russ Fairfield "Secrets of Pen Finishing".

Dick Coers spoke of the Midwest pen turning gathering to be held at the Phillips Recreation Center, 505 W. Stoughton, Urbana Illinois on the 24th of March. The event will be from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be demonstrations, items for sale and swap. Admission is free. More information is available on their website at drybonz.4t.com/about.html

Terry Quiram polled the group to see if there was any interest in demonstrating at the "Living History" festival in Toluca Illinois on the 9th of June. Event times are 10a.m. to 4p.m. Members that participate will be allowed to sell their wares. No fees will be charged. This is a new event for Toluca and we getting in on the ground floor. Approximately 10 members expressed an interest in participating. All members are encouraged to participate or just come and gab. Terry will get in touch with the festival committee to let them know we will be there and to discuss set up requirements. Members with specific questions please email Terry.

Turning supplies purchased through the Woodworkers Shop in Pekin qualify for a 10% club discount. Items purchased prior to meeting night can be sent to the Bloomington store for pick up on meeting night. Their website is www.woodworkersshop.com.

Anchor seal is available to club members at $10 per gallon. Contact Terry Quiram before the next meeting and he will bring your order, or you can go to Terry's home and pick some up.

OVWG Biennial Symposium

The Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild announces its 5th Biennial Symposium to be held on October 12, 13, and 14, 2007 at the Higher Ground facilities just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. The featured turners are Trent Bosch, Nick Cook, Clay Foster, Matthew Hill, Mark Kauder, Graeme Priddle, Mark Sfirri, and Molly Winton along with some very good local talent in 25 additional rotations.

They have a very nice facility in the woods in Southeastern Indiana. There will be a trade show, instant gallery, auction run by John Hill of the AAW, dining hall and dorm rooms on the premises, and a Saturday night banquet. We have a limit of 250 attendees each day, so get your application in early.

Member's Challenge

Dennis Belcher's name was drawn to provide the next members challenge piece. Dennis has chosen the challenge piece to be a natural edge bowl. Your piece for the challenge should be brought to the April meeting at Millworks in Bloomington. Here is an example of Dennis's Challenge.

Show-n-tell.

A lot of members participated in the "Members challenge". Phil Korem challenged the group to turn a goblet with a captured ring. Thanks Phil, for the good challenge. Terry Quiram donated 2 blanks of figured hard maple and the club supplied a gift certificate to Craft Supplies for the drawing to challenge participants and show and tell exhibitors. Winners of the blanks were Peter Johnson and Dave Kraft. Mike Caperelli won the gift certificate.

Our youngest member Peter Johnson showed a couple of bowls and a mushroom he completed. Well done Peter, you are off to a good start.

Dick Coers presented the evening's program. Dick discussed log orientation and sawing technique to get the best figure for turning. Dick demonstrated sawing a limb that had an offset pith. He also showed how to get the best grain in a crotch section. Dick provided handouts that show what your piece might look like when sawn from different location and orientations of the log. Thanks Dick.
