Terry Quiram called the July meeting of the Central Illinois Woodturners to order July 10 at 6:30. McLean County FairMike Swartz and Mike James explained the fair's Katrina project. The Central Illinois Woodworkers club has pre-cut lumber for making doghouses and birdhouses for Katrina victims. Central Illinois Woodturners were asked to volunteer to help with the assembly and provide the "adult hands" for this project. The fair is held August 2-6 at the Interstate Center on the west edge of Bloomington, off of route 9. The tent will be open from 12 noon-8 p.m. Contact Terry Quiram if you are interested in volunteering some time to help with this project. Club turning demonstrationsDave Carroll checked on the possibility of the club turning at the Pekin Marigold Festival this year. This will not be possible as there is no electricity to the craft booths and generators are not allowed in the park. Terry Quiram is looking into the Funks Grove event at the nature center. Several turners participated in the event last year. Officer electionWe'll elect new officers in October. President, vice president and secretary are the offices which will need to be filled. We are looking for volunteers. New officers will begin filling the office in January. MentoringWe had some good discussion on a club sponsored mentoring program. We will have more information on this as we get a program organized. Members who volunteered to be mentors are: Keith Adams, Dave Kraft, Dwight Crane, Dave Lee, Ron Bell, Jim Meizelis, Dennis Belcher, Terry Quiram and Dave Carroll. If you find information on structuring a mentoring program or want to volunteer to be a mentor let Terry Quiram know. Professional turning demoTerry is going to contact Steve Sinner to see if he can schedule a Saturday demo for the club. Demo and hands on at Keith's shopThe turners who went to Keith Adams shop in June appreciated his demo very much. Keith volunteered to do another session, either a demo or hands on. Jim Meizelis volunteered to coordinate this so if you are interested contact Jim at Meizelis@frontiernet.net. Anchor sealTerry Quiram has a drum of anchor seal. Members can contact Terry if they want some. The price is $10 per gallon. August President's challengeThe challenge for September is to turn a sphere. August programDennis Belcher will lead the program on shape and form. He asked members to bring some pieces with good and bad forms. Show-n-tellBill Patton - vases from cedar and walnut and an egg. Dick Coers gave the club an excellent demonstration of the Sorby texturing tool. Dick brought examples with him and then showed how to use the tool to create them. Thanks again Dick. |
