Newsletter Editor: Keith Zimmerman   Website: CentralIllinoisWoodturners.com   January 2008   Volume 11, number 1

The January meeting of the Central Illinois Woodturners was held January 14, 2008 at Millworks in Bloomington. The next meeting will be February 11th at Woodcraft in Peoria. The program will be Roger Buss talking about his trip to Peru. This month there were 37 members and guests in attendance. We wish a hardy welcome to Jeff Blizzard, Larry Monroe, and Charley McCarthy.

President Jerry Rhoads opened the meeting by announcing that our club had been named a "Star" club on the AAW site because all our members are AAW members. Congratulations everyone! Duane, the manager of Millworks announced that Russ Johnson is back and the store will be carrying tools again. Also, the store will be having a show February 22 & 23 and they would like the club to have a demonstrations area.

Members Challenge

The Member's Challenge for January was for everyone to make a Christmas ornament of any kind, solid, hollow, inside out, or any type of ornament for the tree. But make it one from this season! The challenge for March will be to create a vase/weed pot and flower. Both vase and flower must both be turned items.

Treasurer's Report

Treasurer Terry Quiram reviewed the income & expenses for the month.

Membership

Membership chairman Dave Carroll reminded all members that 2008 club dues are due, as are dues to the AAW. There are currently 63 members of the club. Anyone wishing to pay their club dues via mail can mail them to Dave at 10198 N. Point Rd., Tremont, IL 61568. He can be reached at 309/925-3222, and his email address is carroll@dpc.net.

New Business

Woodcraft of Peoria will have a booth at an "Art in the Park" weekend at Wildlife Prairie Park (west of Peoria) in July (date will come later.) Roger Buss would like our club to be represented at the booth to demonstrate. We can also sell.

"Windy City" turning club would like to give a presentation at our February meeting. Jerry Rhoads will follow-up.

Frank Kobilsek is attending the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina and asked if anyone had some last minute advice?

Dick Coers briefly talked about the rose engine lathe he is working on and showed some very impressive items he made with his prototype. He will be giving a demonstration of his project at out August meeting. More information can be found on the AAW site. There is an Ornamental Turners International (OTI) group that is specifically interested in this type of work.

Jerry Rhoads passed out several catalogs from the Industrial Abrasives Co. See the Links page for a link to this company.

Upcoming tool shows include shows on January 18-20, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis, IN, on February 8-10, at the St. Louis Gateway Center in Collinsville, IL, and on February 22-24, at the Wisconsin Exposition Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Woodworking Shows are presented by WOOD magazine (http://www.thewoodworkingshows.com/).

Membership approved adding a "for sale" web page to our site for tools and shop supplies (not for selling turnings.) The seller needs to send information to Keith Zimmerman and notify him when an item is sold. The seller needs to include description and contact information; pictures are acceptable.

Old Business

Dennis Belcher reported on the Top-a-Thon, held December 8th, at Woodcraft in Peoria. We rose over $1,000 for the Children's Home. Dennis thanked everyone for their contribution and time which was very much appreciated by the Children's Home.

Hartville tools is offering a discount program of up to 20% (first year, %15 following years) for club members and a 3% return to the club. Your name must be on their list for you to qualify. Jerry passed out Hartville catalogs to those interested in them. Please let Jerry Rhoads know if you want to participate by sending him your address.

We still have Anchor seal available to club members at $10 per gallon - Contact Terry Quiram in you want to purchase some.

Education committee

Dave Kraft reported that Duane Leach from the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners will be our educational event scheduled for April 26th, 2008. Dave is looking for topics for Duane, so send you requests to Dave at djkraft@ilstu.edu. Duane's specialties are lattice work and offset turning.
