Opening Announcements

The Children's Home thanked our club for our donations. Also, they had an unfortunate event: their activity barn burnt and there was insufficient insurance to cover the building and contents. Might be an opportunity to help them.

Dick Coers announced the 2008 Midwest Penturning Gathering in Champaign on March 29. They have a web site set up with information. This will be the second year. Last year was a great time. Something like 50+ people from 6 states. Demos, show and tell, pen blanks swap and sale, door prizes, etc. The location will be at the Carpenter's Hall, 402 S Duncan, Champaign, IL (Just south of the corner of Duncan and Springfield (Rt. 10).) The website is: http://s3.excoboard.com/exco/forum.php?forumid=16068

The Ornamental Turning Symposium on Sep. 26-28 is in St. Louis. You have to be a member of their AAW chapter to participate. Dues to their chapter are $35. More info at Ornamentalturners.org

Roger Buss from Woodcraft announced the following events at the store:

An open house April 18-19th with demonstrations and vendors
March 1st sale! There will be a 10% on selected items until them for CIW members if you tell the associate when checking out.
Peoria Area Woodworkers website is being developed by the store - watch for details.

Bill Paullo has small and large hollowing systems from Don Pencil Woodturning. He is willing to bring them to a meeting if there is interest.

Terry Quiram mentioned that he now makes Three point tools if anyone is interested.

Jim Meizelis brought some brochures North House School in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. He discussed his experiences at the school: "If you are interested in learning rustic skills in a scenic and historic location, it was a super experience on the shores of Lake Superior. You build your own personal pole lathe and turn a simple item for practice. The rough timber is from a local saw mill and basic hand tools are used for the most part. At the end of the class, I had a pole lathe to take home plus several pieces of block stock. Given the location and the take home lathe, it is well worth the trip.
Additionally, this is one of the most scenic areas of North America and the trip along the North Shore offers many opportunities to sightsee: Duluth harbor, Split Rock lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, Grand Portage, Isle Royale, Thunder Bay, etc.
The instructor makes Windsor chairs as a "day job"... Sometimes on a pole lathe."

Chicago Woodturners are pleased to present a Woodturning Symposium, to be held on July 25, 26, 27, 2008 at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL 60060, in the north Chicago suburbs. The website is: http://www.chicagowoodturners.com/. A link to the flyer with more details is: http://www.chicagowoodturners.com/symposium/flyer.pdf

Library

Club Librarian Ken Baird reported the library had a new DVD, "Hollow Forms and Urns - A Workshop" by Mike Mahoney. There have been 4 items missing for a long time. They are: the book "Green Wood Turning" by Michael O'Donnell, the book "Useful Wood Projects", the VHS tape "Box turning" by Bin Pho, and the VHS tape "VNatural Edge and Hollow Forms" by Chris Stott. There are 2 other items that have recently gone missing. They are "Turn it on Volume 2" by Jimmy Clewes and "Finishing Secrets of Pens" by Russ Fairfield. If anyone knows where any of these items might be, please return them to Ken. Thanks.

New Business

John Katzke announced that The Baby Fold in Normal is asking for donations of ornaments for Christmas trees the organization sells to raise money. Each tree is "pre-decorated" then raffled off. Please keep the Christmas spirit alive all year by making two or three ornaments that are 2" -5" tall and weigh 3-4 oz. Bring them to the Peoria Woodcraft store and they will be on display throughout the year. Also price them appropriately so that the Baby Fold has an idea of their value.

Jim Meizelis brought up that we are looking for ideas to "pizzazz up" our meetings to keep the membership interested at all levels. Jim will be sending out a request for your ideas. Jim will look into AAW insurance requirements for mentoring in your home.

Club Lathe - The club officers are looking into buying a lathe to accommodate demonstrating larger turning demonstrations and projects. Approval was given to continue research. A Jet 1642 is being considered which will be stored at the Woodcraft store for official CIW functions. It will not be available for general walk-in turning and fixtures will be the responsibility of the demonstrator. Jim Meizelis will look into AAW insurance requirements.

Terry Quiram announced that our barrel of Anchor seal (for sealing fresh cut wood) is about gone. After discussion, it was approved to acquire more. Roger Buss said that Woodcraft may be able to handle bulk sales too. This will be investigated further

Old Business

Manager of Millworks (Duane) the store will be having a show February 22 & 23 and they would like the club to have a demonstrations area. Jerry Rhoads will be coordinating

Hartville tools is offering a discount program of up to 20% (first year, %15 following years) for club members and a 3% return to the club. Your name must be on their list for you to qualify. Jerry passed out Hartville catalogs to those interested in them. Please let Jerry Rhoads know if you want to participate by sending him your address.

The CIW website now has a Classified page for selling tools and materials. Contact webmaster Keith Zimmerman to have something added to the page.

Demonstration

feb08_15.JPG  feb08_16.JPG
Roger Buss gave us a presentation on his trip to the western Amazon headwaters in Peru. The visuals showed a very different land than we know in central Illinois. The area he visited is only 300 feet above sea level and 2,300 miles from the mouth of the rivers. During the wet season, the water rises 80 feet! There are no roads in or out: all traffic is by air or water. The wood harvesting and milling operation is helping an extremely economically poor region move from cocaine harvesting to a more beneficial product. About 12 different species of wood are available. The harvesting is controlled so as not to damage the wood resources available and insure ample supply for future generations. Woodcraft will be the supplier of the exotic wood products from the area. Ask to see Roger's photo album at the Peoria Woodcraft store.
